The Words I Never Finished: An Elegy for Daddy

Celebrating Daddy’s 65th birthday, 2020 via Falando Jones Photography

Today I’m sharing an elegy honoring my father, who transitioned five years ago this December.

Daddy, Thank You

I didn’t know what I’d say when the day arrived

but I knew with the passage of time and the stillness of soul

my words would flow.

You know what? You were supposed to be here. Dancing with Mama

instead of the stars as y’all celebrated 48 years of blood, sweat, and tears,

weathering each storm and coming out stronger than before, because that’s just what y’all did.

You should’ve been here to celebrate your 71st, and you’re not.

I’m sure I would’ve made your lemon pound cake with that drizzle you liked—

Did you know you helped me want to know how to bake?

I miss you, Daddy, but I thank you, too.

We’ve had some great memories, even your last earthly birthday and anniversary

we spent together. You cut up with me, as usual,

and now I get it. You’ve always wanted me to run and soar freely,

nothing weighing me down, tethering me to the ground.

So thank you, Daddy. Even though you won’t see this, I know you’re grateful I finally get it.

This is an awkward ending, but so was December 30th, and I—
